My internship weeks compared to my school weeks are pretty different. For starters, I don't leave the house nearly as much. I'm still doing work for 6-7 hours a day, so it feels similar in that regard, but even the kind of work I'm doing is a lot different. It's less stressful, I'm more comfortable with the field I'm working in and I have more control over it. I really like it honestly. That's why I often feel like I could have an easier time with certain jobs than I do with school. With school, I come in a lot of the time not entirely knowing everything that's going down, anything is bound to change in our assignment and such, but with a job, there's more control involved. Or, at least, I have a better understanding with what I'm doing. If I work at Burger King I know that today probably will be very much like yesterday. That's the same with my internship, I know pretty much exactly what I'm signing up for, while with school that's not always the case. It's just a totally different vibe, really. Look at this; these are my hours for the week. I pretty much choose it myself, I'm not really working a set amount of time. There's a certain frame I clock in and out at but, technically, I could work for twelve hours straight and there'd be no one stopping me.
I wouldn't though.

Today's prompt: What limitations have you recognized in yourself that you want to overcome during internship, or use this internship experience to help you overcome?
Hmm. I think I kinda space out after working for a few hours. It's definitely due to a lack of structured breaks, I usually try to work as long as I possibly can in one stride. I've already started to try to make my days more structured, starting at around 8-8:30, and clocking in my time about 6-6.5 hours later. Maybe I could set times for breaks too? Even just short ones where I get up and walk around, stretch a bit, maybe look outside. The medium I'm interested in, art, could potentially have a lot of me working freelance from home, so this is a good opportunity for me to get that straight. A little update too, here's the progress I've done on the eighth page so far! The biggest challenge I face at my internship? I'm not really sure, to be truthful! Every day seems pretty consistent in what I face. I feel like the biggest hurdles will come once I finish the illustrations of the story I'm doing (which will likely be this week). That's when I'll be moving on to the animation, which, as I've experienced, is a long and tedious process. But rewarding! So I'll be anticipating that. Speaking of animation, I visited the animation studio Roger in LA a few days ago! It was a super cool experience. I didn't really take any pictures, in hindsight I should have, but I did take notes! An interesting coincidence came from this. At the hotel the night before, I put on some Disney Channel in the background. One of the shows that came on was Bizaardvark, which I had never heard of before. It turns out the people at that studio work on that show, and I got to see them do a little work on it! It was super cool. It does look interesting there; who knows, maybe I'll visit again sometime!
Today, I've commented on three other intern's blogs! Udeema, Grayson, and Angel! They've all got interesting stuff going on. Grayson's working with something in marketing? Yes! They mentioned a wacom board being used there, which is basically exactly what I use every day! Howdy, wow! Udeema's at a museum I believe? Deals with bugs? The one I saw was dead. I don't work with any kind of dead bugs. Or living bugs? Living anything really. Angel works with the living too. Gophers, pesting up a farm, and spiders too. Scary stuff. I don't go outside a lot, only to walk the dog.
I guess that's kinda working with the living! I honestly wonder how they do it! Working with gophers and such. I couldn't do that. I really don't have the energy. Energy, so much energy. Hah, wish I knew that! Energy. Illustrating's going good by the way A picture of myself every day this week, progressing! (Ok, a bit out of order here! I was accidentally going off the blog post guidelines that were a day ahead for the past two days, so here's the one I missed!)
So, I've been at this internship for a little over a week now. My internship project is to illustrate for a children's book, and also make a short video to promote it. I'm about halfway through with the illustrations, so that part of it I'm doing pretty okay at! Overall, I'll be applying character design, coloring, drawing, and video editing skills in these projects, and will hopefully learn something about organization in freelance work! I hope to have full illustrations for all the pages and a short, not sure how long exactly but short, animated video by the end of this! How do I see myself developing/changing over the course of this internship? I'd say better working habits. I do have projects and such that I work on from home outside of this internship, but, I've said this before, will sometimes have trouble motivating myself to work on it, even if I feel like i want to. Dedicating time to doing exactly that, working on projects from home, and for a month too, could certainly shape my working habits on other things for the better in the future.
Not much social interactions go on for me in my days of work. The most interactions I get is with other people is sending project-related emails. There's a lot of doing my own thing because of this. Sometimes my dad will watch TV, if he's home, and my dog sometimes will ask to go out back. That's the most that really goes on. This could have an effect on my work, I'll bet. I feel like I get less distracted because it's just me maybe. If I need feedback I have an email to send.
Maybe it could be healthier for me to get out more... I'm heading to LA next week. That should be exciting. Somone who is certainly benefiting from my work at this internship is the author of the book I'm illustrating. After all, I'm providing pictures for it! Breathing freshness and color into the story, it's an important task, and I'm glad that I could help in doing this. People in the community who would benefit from this would definitely be children who may end up reading the book. They'll be drawn by the pictures, and might even learn something from sticking around and reading the story. An excellent thing!
Because I'm working after a more freelance mentor, my work style reflects that sort of work. I'm at home a lot actually, it can be done from my computer. It has its benefits, it's a bit less stressful and there's considerabley less dread when I don't have to care if I'm ugly or not because my family dog doesn't judge beauty. Maybe it can be a bit hard at times staying focused, just because it's so comfortable, however, I don't really have structured breaks or anything. I usually keep going until I feel like a quick break and then continue until 6 hours of work is all wrapped. I think what surprised me most is how well things worked out this week. I'm able to have this project where I'm illustrating for a picture book, and I was able to get quite a lot of productive work done! Pictured above is the background to one of my illustrations, which I managed to complete within two days of work. Typically, it can take longer for me to complete such tasks, as I don't normally have a set and structured day of focused work.
I'm so glad to have this opportunity that allows me to apply my skills and do something I truly have interest in, and I can't wait to see where it takes me in the coming weeks! |
